Deer Repellent

The more you know about deer the easier it will be to make your garden and landscaping less appealing to local wildlife. Deer are random nibblers and snack on many varieties of greens in your yard while ignoring others. There are deer repellents, both natural and manufactured, that can be purchased to ward off these creatures. Generally, deer do not prefer plants with fragrant leaves or ones that are sticky, rough, or fuzzy to the touch.
Fencing & Netting: Fences can be installed, but this is probably the most labor-intensive option that you have. Typically a six-foot high fence is an effective remedy for keeping your garden safe. Deer fencing is sold in rolls and consists of a heavy gauge, plastic mesh that is put up with stakes or posts. Another option is deer netting. This is sold in multiple sizes, which can be cut to fit as needed. Netting is a flexible plastic mesh that lays easily over shrubbery or flowers. It can even be draped securely over small trees. This product is so thin that it is virtually invisible after it is applied.
Granular Deer Repellent: One of the newest and most effective granular repellents is Deer Scram. There is no mixing or spraying involved; just shake this organic product on the ground. Apply as a protective perimeter strip at least 18 inches away from the area you are trying to protect. This product has a minimum 30-day residual period during the growing season and is one of the only repellents that can be

applied in winter. Deer Scram lasts up to 3 months in the winter and can be applied directly on top of snow.
Liquid Deer Repellents: Liquid Fence is a safe, easy to use spray repellent. This product should be applied once a month under normal conditions to maintain proper protection. If deer pressure is intense, you may want to step up the applications as needed. It is an all-natural product and safe for people and pets if used as directed. Liquid Fence has a strong odor that dissipates after it dries leaving it virtually undetectable to humans. Deer Off provides an odor and taste barrier that repels deer and other hungry animals. Under normal deer pressure it lasts 2-3 months but should be re-applied in times of heavy browsing. This product is weather resistant but should be used in temperatures above 40 degrees. Bobbex deer repellent is a 2-in-1 product that not only protects plants but feeds them as well. This spray lasts up to 2 months and can be used on almost any plant, including vegetable crops. It leaves no harmful residue and is enhanced with a pleasant wintergreen scent.
