 Evergreen Groundcovers

* English Ivy: glossy leaves on a woody vine. Sun or shade. Great for large areas; can be invasive.  May grow on tree trunks or walls.

* Juniper: short-pointy needled shrub. Sun or partial shade. Will tolerate heat and drought when established. Low maintenance.

* Vinca (Periwinkle): dense carpet of shiny leaves with spring flowers. Sun or shade. Tolerates adverse conditions.

* Pachysandra: upright, dark green leaves form dense cover. Partial to full shade. Prefers rich, well-drained soil.

High-Traffic Groundcovers

* Blue Star Creeper: small-leafed perennial with light blue star-shaped flowers in early summer. Sun or part shade.  Mat-like foliage.

* Brass Buttons (Leptinella): fern-like, soft green/gray foliage. Sun or part shade. Tolerates wet areas and acid soil.

* Snow-In-Summer (Cerastium): woolly, narrow, gray-leafed perennial with white flowers in early summer. Well-drained soil.

* Irish Moss: dense mat of green moss-like foliage.  Scotch moss is identical but gold in color. Works between stepping stone/pavers.

* Thyme: tiny scented leaves with small but colorful flowers in summer.  Sun or part shade.  Numerous varieties available.

Eye-Catching Foliage Groundcovers
* Ajuga: rich green, purple, and/or variegated oval leaves with flower spikes in spring. Sun or shade. Low maintenance.

* Bishop’s Weed (Aegopodium): white-edged leaves form a creeping mass about 6 inches high.  Sun or shade. Easy care perennial.

* Chameleon Ivy: colorful leaves of green, yellow, red, and orange that spread quickly. Sun or shade. Works well in moist areas.

*Hens & Chicks: ground-hugging rosettes of succulent leaves that multiply readily. Sun or part shade. Tolerates drought and poor soil.

* Ice Plant (Lampranthus) succulent sprawling leaves with daisy-like flowers in summer.  Sun or part shade. Drought tolerant.

 

Flowering Groundcovers

*Bellflower (Campanula): varieties include trailing and mounding plants with bell-shaped flowers. Sun or light shade. 

*Candytuft: bushy, dark green mats with white tufts of flowers in the spring. Sun or part shade. Good over walls and slopes.

*Coral Bells: mounds of beautiful ivy-shaped foliage in green, burgundy, or variegated colors. White or scarlet flowers in summer. Sun or part shade.

*Dianthus: slender leaves in green or blue that grow in tufts.  Variety of flower colors available. Sun or part shade. 

*Geranium (Cranesbill): Green to bronze leaves with profuse flowers when established. Sun and well-drained soil. Numerous varieties.

*Lamb’s Ear: fuzzy, thick leaves appear silver in color.  Pink or purple flower spikes in summer. Sun or shade. Easy to grow.

*Lamium: silvery, pale green leaves with summer flower spikes.  Pastel flower colors. Part sun to full shade. Semi-evergreen.

*Lily-of-the-Valley: spreading upright leaves with bell-shaped white flowers in spring. Part to full shade. Thrives in moist soil.

* Phlox: wide-spreading mats of greenery burst with color in the spring.  Sun to part shade. Perfect on slopes and walls.

* Plumbago (Ceratostigma): oval, dark green leaves turn bronze-red in fall.  Blue flowers in mid-late summer. Sun or light shade.

* Rock Cress (Arabis): gray-green foliage with fragrant springtime flowers of pink or white. Sun or part shade. Good edging.

* Rose (Carpet Variety): hardy, vigorous plants that spread up to 8 feet wide and 2 feet high. Most bloom all season. Sun. 

* Sedum: interesting succulent-like foliage on numerous groundcover varieties. Sun to partial shade. Good between rocks or pavers.
