Seasonal Tips!!

May Tips

  • May is a great time to plant lawns, trees, shrubs, perennials vegetables and later in the month annuals and more tender vegetables like Tomatoes and peppers. Be sure to ask about our favorite soil amendments like Soil Conditioner and Posy Power.
  • Continue to feed the Wild Birds. This is their nesting time and there is little food reserve left from winter.
  • Fertilize trees, shrubs, perennials and ground covers. We recommend Osmocote, Monty's Joy Juice, Milorganite or Espoma Products depending on your situation. This will get your plants off to a great start and help to strengthen your plants preventing disease and insects.
  • Prune summer-flowering shrubs before new growth begins. These would be plants such as Butterfly Bush and Weigelia. Wait to prune spring-flowering shrubs until after flowers have faded. These would include shrubs such as Azaleas and Rhododendrons. Finish pruning Grapes and Fruit trees Early in the Month.
  • Remove tree wraps from last year.
  • Prune Roses watching for new buds to tell you where to prune.
  • Lime Lawns, Vegetable Gardens and Flower beds if not done in the Fall.
  • Prune down Grasses if not done already before they begin to push growth.
  • Stop in and decide what to do for your Lawn this season. We carry Jonathan Green Lawn Care Products and have Experts that can help you put a program together for your lawn. Some things to start thinking about are liming, seeding, fertilizing, weed, insect and disease controls.
  • May is still a good time to move & divide perennials, mums and grasses. If you need help with ideas and suggestions give us a call. We do Landscape Design and Installation.
  • Till that vegetable garden whenever the weather permits and watch for cool weather plants like, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, broccoli and lettuce etc. We will have these early. They will take a frost and should be planted earlier.
  • Vegetable seeds that can be planted directly in the soil are carrots, parsnips, peas, lettuce, spinach, beets, kale, cabbage, broccoli and radishes to name a few. Don't forget onions, garlic and potatoes. Wait until mid to late May for Green Beans, melons, zuchini, cucumbers and other warm season veggies.
  • A few flowers that take the cool weather are Dusty Miller, Dianthus, Petunia, Verbena, Snap Dragons, Allysum, Violas & Pansy's. You can plant these anytime now if they are hardened off.
  • Spray Juniper for tip blight with Maneb as new growth begins.
  • Apply Jonathan Green Moss control granules to get rid of moss. Reseed and keep lawn well limed and Fertilized.
  • Beds can be edged, clean up perennials, prune trees and shrubs, apply fertilizer then pre emergent weed control and mulch.
  • Plant some Herbs for cooking with, either in the ground or in containers. Parsley and Chives will take the frost. Watch out for Basil, it is very sensitive to cold.
  • Spring bulbs like Dahlias, Cannas, Begonias, Calla Lily etc. can be potted up and started now for planting once the weather warms. Lilies can go directly in the ground if hardened off.
